Preserving Legacy While Embracing Modern Living

In the heart of Philadelphia’s charming Fitler Square neighborhood, a 30-year-old rowhouse has been transformed into a contemporary family home that honors its architectural roots while embracing modern functionality. ASW Hobart Construction carefully executed the renovation, preserving the home’s natural light and open layout—key features that initially attracted the homeowners to the property.

“The house was beautifully designed in the early ’90s with unique architecture and design elements,” notes homeowner Sarah Pierce. “It was important for us to preserve the natural light and open flow of the home, while updating to a contemporary aesthetic.”

Culinary Transformation

The renovation’s centerpiece is undoubtedly the kitchen—a space that seamlessly blends form and function. ASW Hobart Construction executed Jason Thompson’s vision for a modern yet warm culinary space featuring custom cabinetry, sleek built-in appliances, and a concealed hood. The masterful craftsmanship is evident in every detail, from the precision-fitted cabinetry to the perfectly balanced lighting.

Inspired by European design, the kitchen features an induction cooktop and steam oven—modern technologies that proved perfect for hosting family gatherings, including their annual Thanksgiving celebration. “Thanksgiving to us is about good food and relaxed time with family,” says Pierce, highlighting how the renovated space has enhanced their lifestyle.

Architectural Poetry in Light and Space

One of the most striking features of this renovation is the curved staircase that travels down all four floors of the home. ASW Hobart Construction’s skilled craftsmen faced the considerable challenge of creating this elegant architectural element that serves as both functional passage and sculptural centerpiece. At the top, a skylight bathes the stairwell in natural light, creating a dramatic play of light and shadow throughout the day.

“To have a house in the city that has so much natural light and greenery in almost every direction is unusual,” remarks homeowner Faiz Ahmad, underscoring the property’s unique character that ASW Hobart Construction worked diligently to preserve.

Modern Systems in a Classic Shell

Beyond the visible aesthetic transformations, ASW Hobart Construction implemented comprehensive infrastructure upgrades throughout the 3,300-square-foot home. The renovation included replacing all 31 windows, installing a new HVAC system, creating custom built-in cabinetry and shelving, and replacing the roof and flooring.

This comprehensive approach ensured that the home not only looks beautiful but functions flawlessly for modern family living. The careful balance of preservation and modernization reflects ASW Hobart Construction’s commitment to thoughtful, quality craftsmanship.

Community Connections

The renovation project revealed more than just the home’s potential—it also highlighted the strength of the Fitler Square community. When Hurricane Ida hit in 2021 and water poured in from the nearby Schuylkill River, neighbors quickly rallied to help protect the family’s newly renovated home.

This community spirit reinforces what makes urban living in a thoughtfully renovated historic home so special. ASW Hobart Construction didn’t just create a beautiful living space—they helped craft a home that connects its residents to the vibrant neighborhood around them.

Artful Living

Throughout the home, carefully curated artwork adds personality and color to the clean, contemporary spaces. The renovation created perfect backdrops for displaying the family’s collection, with specialized lighting and thoughtful sightlines that make the art an integral part of the home experience.

The collaboration between ASW Hobart Construction and Kaminski + Pew resulted in a renovation that respects the original architecture while creating a thoroughly modern living environment. From the sophisticated kitchen to the show-stopping staircase, every element works in harmony to create a home that’s both beautiful and functional.

For the homeowners, who moved in April 2020, the renovation has transformed not just their physical space but their quality of life. The home now perfectly suits their family’s needs while honoring the architectural vision that first drew them to this special property in Fitler Square.
